Rwanda Mission Trips

The nation of Rwanda experienced a terrible genocide in 1994 in which almost a million people were slaughtered in just 100 days. Since then, Rwandans have struggled with trying to exist in the aftermath of that violence and to rebuild their country.

Church of the Resurrection is committed to an ongoing mission to support the Anglican Church of Rwanda. We have sponsored two missions, one in 2005 and one in 2007. We are planning our next mission for the summer of 2008.

The Rwanda mission grows out of our essential relationship as a part of the Anglican Communion through the Province of Rwanda. As a congregation in the Anglican Mission in the Americas, COTR is a mission of the Church of Rwanda. The first priority of the Rwanda Mission is to enhance and build our relationship with our home Church in Rwanda. This relationship will lead to acts of service and strengthening of the body of Christ at COTR.

Since the people of Rwanda have many physical needs, it is natural that this missionary effort include to use of our affluence towards the needs of Rwanda. However in order for this effort to be a genuine Christian expression of concern for God’s people, it must include personal involvement as well as financial commitment.

We have developed a long standing relationship with the Diocese of Kigali and Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini. The Rwanda missions developed out of conversations with Archbishop Kolini. During these missions, the relationship with the Diocese of Kigali has broadened to include other members of the staff and associated ministries in Kigali. Therefore much of the future work is expected to be concentrated in Kigali.

Additionally, we have worked with Rev. Elizabeth Sausele, who has established a relationship with the Diocese of Cyangugo and Bishop Geoffrey Rwubusisi. During the Mission 2007 we spent several days in Cyangugo. This is likely to lead to Cyangugo being a secondary area of ministry.
